Elkader Register, Thur., 24 May 1923.
The death of Mrs. Albert W. Schmidt occurred at her home here yesterday afternoon, May 23, after an illness of about two years duration, at the age of 60 years, 9 months and 17 days.
Marie Louise Angel Matis was born at Altweir, Alsace Lorraine, France, on July 6, 1862. In 1882, when 20 years of age she came to America with her uncle and aunt and settled at Houston, Texas. After a few years stay in Texas they went to Sacramento, California, where they made their home. Her uncle and aunt died in California. Mrs. Schmidt received her early education in Paris, France, and was a master of the French language and was called upon to translate many letters that came from France to many people of this vicinity.
On March 19, 1892, she was united in marriage to Albert W. Schmidt, of this place, at Sacramento, California. After residing in California for a number of years they came to Clayton county in 1898 and settled on a farm a few miles south of Elkader, where they lived until 1906 when Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt retired from active farm life and came to Elkader to enjoy the remainder of their days. On March 19, 1917, Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt had the pleasure to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary here at Elkader.
Mrs. Schmidt was during the last few years a patient sufferer from cancer. In September 1921 and again in January 1922 she was at a hospital at Savanna, Missouri, consulting some of the most noted doctors of the country, but her disease was of such a nature, that it could not be controlled by the medical skill.
She was an active member of the Frauen-Vereign of the Evang. church, always ready to lend a helping hand for the service of God and her church. She was also a member of the American Yoemen and the Rebeccas. As long as her health permitted she was an active worker in the Sunday school of her church.
She is survived by her faithful husband, one sister, Mrs. Gobell of Alsace Lorraine, France, other distant relatives, many friends and neighbors who will sadly miss her.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon (Friday) at 1:30 p.m. from the late home and at 2:00 o'clock at the Evangelical church, with Rev. C. H. Franke officiating, and she will be laid to rest in the East Side cemetery.
