Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 22 Aug. 1918. Volga column.
Nancy Agnes Hunter was born at Springdale, Pa., July 14, 1827, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Smock, near Volga, Aug. 17, 1918, aged 91 years, 1 month and 8 days.
Miss Hunter was married to James Waltenbaugh at Tarentum, Pa. and in 1858 they moved west to Iowa, settling in Clayton county.
Seven children were born to this union, five of whom survive, George and Elmer, Mrs. Margaret Bently and Mrs. Anna Smock of Volga, and Mrs. Mary Moore of West Union.
The grandchildren number twenty-two, and of these the following reside in Volga and its vicinity: Mrs. Verner Blake, Mrs. Abrams, Mrs. James Whitford, Mrs. Koufare, Mrs. Will Davis, Mrs. Wm. Myers, Mrs. Abner Perkins and Mrs. Darr.
In addition to her fine qualities as wife and mother, Mrs. Waltenbaugh was also an earnest Christian. She was a member of the United Brethren church.
Reading between the lines of these bare facts we have the picture of a typical American woman, bravely encountering the hardships of the pioneer life in a new country, rearing her children during the troublous times of the Civil War, and living to see her children settle and prosper and to rejoice in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they came after.
Like a shock of grain, "fully ripe" she has come to her grave in a good age.
The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church on Tuesday morning, conducted by the Rev. B. F. Pearson, and the interment was in Hillcrest cemetery.
