Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 25 Jan. 1917. Strawberry Point column.

Nicholas Meyer was born in Germany on December 5th, 1834. At the age of twenty-seven years he came to the United States with one sister. He went to Missouri and joined the army, enlisting the 14th day of August, 1861, at St. Charles, Mo.. He enlisted January 25th, 1862, in Co. A, 1st Batt. Cav. M. S. M., mustered out November 23rd, 1862, at Fulton, Mo. Later he came to Dubuque county and was united in marriage with Celia Thompson in the year 1863. This union was blessed with ten children, four of which have passed into the great beyond. Mr. Meyer moved from Dubuque to Cox Creek, where he remained until his death, which occurred at the home of his daughter , Mrs. Geo. Davis, January 14th, 1917. Those who are left to mourn his death are Wm. Meyer, John A., Charley N., Frank L., Elsie Rena Davis and Celia Morris. Mr. Meyer had been failing in health for the past two years when he was taken sick, with a bad cold, which resulted in la grippe, from which his death occurred. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, where mass was offered by Rev. Father Casey and his mortal remains were laid away in the Cox Creek cemetery by those of his beloved wife and children. The members of the G.A.R. of Strawberry Point attended the funeral in a body and conducted their ritual services at the church and at the grave. During the funeral services Father Casey spoke feelingly of Mr. Meyer's Christian virtues and emphasized his patriotic spirit as an American citizen and especially as a soldier which prompted him to be willing to sacrifice all that is dear in life, aye, even life itself, in defense of the stars and stripes. "There is no greater sacrifice," said the speaker, "that man can make, than to give his life for his country. This was the spirit that prompted him and his comrades before me, as you turned your backs on father, mother and wife and all that was near and dear to you, that the stars and stripes might wave over this great, grand and glorious republic, that a union, one and inseparable, might be bequeathed to us and to future generations."
