Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 16 Dec. 1909. Elkport column.

Ransom Daniel Schultz was born April 15, 1896, in Elkport, and died Dec. 8th, 1909, aged 13 years, 7 months and 23 days. He was the only child of Chas. Schultz and his wife Lizzie, nee Johnson. From infancy Ransom was a delicate child and subject to an ailment which with each succeeding year became more and more severe and caused great anxiety and trouble to his devoted parents, who did all which lay in their power to help the one whom they so dearly loved, going from one physician to another, from place to place, consulting each with the same results. At last the spells were not so severe and finally seemed to have been conquered, when, from the heights of hope and joy they were taken down the path to despondency, for their child was taken violently ill and ere a week had passed, the Almighty Father called him home to suffer no more. Physicians, nurse, parents and friends united in their efforts to relieve the suffer and try to carry him back to the station of health, but to no avail. His time had come. On Thanksgiving Day he, with his mother (his constant friend and companion) attended services in the Lutheran church upon the urgent request of the lad, for he wished to thank God for the health of the past two months. At school he was an obedient and loving pupil and schoolmate. This was very touchingly shown, for during the weeks of his sickness a number of his classmates and schoolmates sent him letters of love, hoping to see him back with them again the following week. The teacher, too, loved him, and feels sad over his untimely end. On Saturday, Dec. 11th, the last sad rites were performed, Rev. Linnenbuerger, the Lutheran pastor, in his usual sympathetic and impressive manner, conducting the same. Not an eye but what grew moist and shed a tear of sympathy. Following this sermon Prof. P. White, of our High School, spoke very nobly of the life in the school room and the courtesy and obedience of the child at all times. Ransom loved his teachers, too They, together with the children, sang "Nearer my God to Thee." Then the cortege wound its way up the hill and there left all that was mortal of Ransom, in the Lutheran cemetery. Ransom is gone in body, but his spirit will hover around his loving parents and from his home on high will welcome their coming, when they shall have traveled to the end of life's journey. Many followed to the grave, and so may all follow where "a little child leadeth." The pall bearers were chosen out of the school and were Lowell Fitz-Jerrell, Carl Roeder, Ray Zearley, Arnold Krieg, Norman Nichols and Leo McGuire. The flower bearers were schoolmates also and were Mattie Luetje, Mary Sandusky, Mildred Hanneman, Lulu Gray, Mildred Baker and Ethel Darrow. The flowers were numerous and beautiful, one bouquet being given by teacher and schoolmates.
