Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 30 Sept. 1909. Strawberry Point column.
Wm. Mercer, the jockey who was so badly injured in a running race at the fair, died at 12:30 Sunday morning without ever regaining consciousness. A swelling started on one side of the man's neck last Wednesday evening, followed by another Friday morning, which puzzled the doctors caring for him, finally diagnosing the case as mumps. He lived for over a week and was never at any time able to take much nourishment. The funeral was held Monday at 2:30 p.m. This will be sad news to the people of Strawberry Point to hear, who sympathized with the young man and his parents.
