Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 09 Sept. 1909. Elkport column.
On the 31st of August, in the insane asylum at Independence, Iowa, occurred the death of George Winch, at the age of 29 years and 10 days. He was born at Ceres on the 21st day of August, 1880. His mother died when he was very young, so he was raised by his step-mother, brothers and sisters. As a young man he worked on farms at several different places, and every one loved and honored him as a respectable young man. When he was about 24 years of age he began to show sings of insanity, and soon after was taken to Independence, where he grew worse and worse until the time of his death. May he have the rest for which his tired soul has longed, for so many years. The words of comfort that were offered to the sorrowing ones were taken from the 73rd Psalm, 25th and 26th verses, "My flesh and my heart faileth, but Thou art my Lord." He leaves to mourn his death his Step-mother, two brothers, Fred and Louis, four half-brothers, Ernest, William, Henry and Eddie, two step-brothers, Walter and Frank, and also two sisters, Mrs. Jos. Meyer and Mrs. Otto Schmelzer, and three half-sisters, Mrs. George Thein, Mrs. Fred Wittman and Malinda at home. His father died about thirteen years ago. Deceased was buried at Ceres on Thursday, September 2nd, Rev. F. Linnenbuerger officiating.
