Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 15 Apr. 1909.
At an early hour Thursday morning, April 8th, 1909, J. E. Webb passed away at his home in Elkader. He had been in poor health for several months past, but was confined to his bed only about two weeks. But little is known of his life except that he was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was an educated man and a graduate of Princeton College, besides having attended a law school in New York.
He came into this county early in the seventies, teaching school near what is now Graham, then at Elkport and in the Simmons district near Strawberry Point. He came to Elkader in January, 1880, and was the principal of the Elkader High school until about five years ago. In 1904 Mr. Webb was elected County Recorder and served two terms.
On October 7th, 1892, Mr. Webb was united in marriage with Miss Ida Schroeder, who survives him.
Mr. Webb was a somewhat peculiar man in some respects. While he had many friends and enjoyed meeting with them, he was not intimate with any. He was loved by his scholars of the High School, who will long keep him in remembrance.
The funeral was held at his late residence on Saturday last, and was largely attended. Mr. V. T. Price made a short address after which Rev. Franke, of the German church, officiated. The choir rendered several old familiar songs which had been selected. The interment was in the East Side cemetery.
Among those who attended from abroad were Mrs. Louis Schroeder, Otto Schroeder and Mrs. Runge, of La Crosse, Wis., Henry Meder, of Mederville, and Fred Meder, of Clayton, and others.
The pall bearers were V. T. Price, Gus H. Wilke, Geo. C. Wolf, W. W. Davidson, Martin G. Hagensick and Max B. Bishop, all graduates of the Elkader High school while deceased was serving as principal.
