Elkader Register, Thur., 19 Oct. 1905. Garnavillo column.
Maria Bahde, nee Rober, was born Sept. 16, 1821, in Brandenfort, Mecklenburg, Schwerein, Germany. Her maiden years were spent in the parental home. In the year 18_4 she took upon herself the holy vows of matrimony and sixteen years later she and her husband, Johann Bahde, and four children, emigrated to this country and settled in Garnavillo twp. Five children, four daughters and a son, were born to them. One of the daughters died at the age of three years and in 1857 they were bereft of another. After her husband's death in 1869 the deceased and her daughter Maria continued to keep house until the fall of 1896, when they went to live with the family of Chris Hirchert. Here the deceased was well cared for during her aged years and all kindness was shown her by her children and great-grandchildren. Her deafness secluded her from the outside world, but she enjoyed the pleasures of the mind without measure and in her quietude ofttimes meditated upon the glories of the hereafter. On Tuesday, the day before her death, she partook of the Lord's Supper. She reached the age of 84 years and 25 days.
Funeral services took place Saturday in St. Peter's Lutheran church, Rev. Bunge, officiating. Burial in the old cemetery.
