Elkader Register, Thur., 07 Sept. 1905. Clayton column.
Mrs. Helen Hayes died at her home here Saturday afternoon, Aug. 26th, after having been a sufferer with cancer of the stomach. Deceased had been in poor health since last fall, yet was able to be out and around, also caring for the household duties until six weeks previous to her death. Helen Hayes was born in Littletown, Ill., Dec. 8, 1850. She was married to Jas. Hayes in Nov., 1868. To this union were born twelve children, of whom survive six boys and two girls, viz, George, Claude and Clifford, of Chicago, Walter, Ed and Jess at home, Mrs. Mart Stoddard, of Buena Vista, and Mrs. John Weins, of Turkey River, These with a sorrowing husband are left to mourn the loss of a true and faithful wife and mother. Mrs. Hayes enjoyed the friendship and esteem of all who knew her and none speak of her but to praise her. She was laid to rest Sunday afternoon, Aug. 27th, in the Clayton cemetery, Rev. Bartlett delivering the sermon. To the husband and children we extend sympathy in their sad bereavement, yet there is held out to them the hope of all meeting again on the other shore, where parting is unknown.
