Elkader Register, Thur., 25 May 1905.
At about five o'clock Wednesday morning, May 24th, 1905, Mrs. Marshall Bachtell, at her home in Elkader, peacefully sank to rest in the sleep that knows no awakening on earth. In her conscious moments, before the end, she said she heard music, sweet music. We hope it was the sweet strains from the golden harps of Heaven. The departed has been a sufferer for the past four years and for nearly six months has been confined to the house.
Sarah E. Cornog was born Feb. 3rd, 1826, at Philadelphia, Pa. In that city on Sept. 16th, 1847, she was united in marriage with Marshall Bachtell. In 1854 they determined to come west and that year came to Cleveland, Ohio. They remained two years in Ohio and in the spring of 1856 came to Clayton county. They settled at National, then in 1858 moved on the farm in Grand Meadow twp., which they now own. In 1871 they came to Elkader, where they have since resided.
Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bachtell: Adelaide, who died in 1856, aged about five years; Charles, who died in 1858, aged ten years; and the daughter Laura, who with the husband and father survives. A nephew, Mr. Louis Kinzie, of Eureka, Cal., with his wife, have been with the family the past few weeks, tenderly assisting in caring for the departed.
For nearly a quarter of a century the writer has been a neighbor of the departed and can truthfully say that she has been a devoted wife and mother and a kind neighbor.
She was a member of the Episcopal church in her younger days, but for the past few years has attended the Congregational church. "Aunt Sallie" as she was familiarly called by her many friends, will be missed from among us, yet having filled out the allotted time, we would not want her to live and suffer. She is at rest. Peace be with her.
The funeral will be from her late residence at two o'clock Friday afternoon. The interment to be in the Elkader cemetery.
