An Early Settler Gone
The death of Grandma Alloway, occurred at the home of her son, A.M. Alloway on the 23d ult., aged almost 75 years. Her maiden name was Jennette Bremner, and she was born in Manitoba, Canada, March 10th, 1830.

In 1835 she moved with her parents from Canada to Scotch Grove, in Jones county, this state. May 1st, 1847, she was married to Azariah Alloway, at Conton, Jackson county. That same summer they moved to Cass twp. and settled in that beautiful spot of nature, "David Mann's Hollow," three miles northeast of Strawberry Point.

They were almost the first settlers in this township, coming here before the Indians had left the country, and when this section was a waste and desolate wilderness. On the 3d of March, 1848, A.M. Alloway, their eldest son, was born in that Hollow, and was one of the first male children born in this township.

In 1855 they moved on Honey Creek, in the northern part of Lodomillo township, but they also resided in Cox Creek township, moving there in 1848 or 1849, and the claim is made that they were the first settlers in that township.

In 1871 her husband died at their home on Honey Creek.

For the last few years she has been a great sufferer. Death came as a relief to her. Besides her son with whom she lived, she leaves one daughter, Mrs. Ellen Davis of Ipswich, South Dakota, who was unable to be present.

She was widely known, and highly esteemed by everyone who knew her. She was a member of the Catholic church and died, fortified by its las rites. The funeral was held from her late home on the 25th, conducted by Rev. Father Minogue, of Elkport, and she was buried in the cemetery south of town. The funeral was very largely attended and showed the high regard in which she was held.
