Roy Harrison Jewell was born near Scales Mound, Ill., Joe Daviess Co., August 10, 1888, and died at sea Oct. 1st, 1918, at the age of 30 years, 1 month and 14 days.

The Jewell family moved to the farm home in Delaware County 19 years ago and there they have lived ever since. Several years ago Mr. Jewell put the farm business into the hands of his three sons, Roy, Albert and John. They managed the farm under the name of Jewell Bros. Roy was the manager of the swine department. This arrangement prospered unusually well and the deceased was very successful with his part of it.

He was a faithful working member of the Forestville Methodist church having joined that society under the ministry of Rev. De Puy.

On July 23rd of this year he was called to military service. He was sent to Camp Gordon at Atlanta, Ga. From there he was transferred to Camp Merritt, Jersey City, N.J., where recently he had embarked for France. He was taken sick while at sea and had just entered the English Channel midnight of Sept. 30 when the following morning he died. He died with a clear record and the honors of an American soldier.

His health had always been good. He was robust and pleasing in appearance. Those that had lived with him and others bear testimony to the fact of a kind, loving and pleasant disposition.

His letters home from camp were letters bearing no note of care of self, but were cherry and helpful for those at home. There will be no filling the place such as he has left.

There are at the home mourning his death the father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. T.R. Jewell, two brothers, John and Earl; and two sisters, Della and Edith. Besides these a sister, Mrs. Harry Sincock, lives at Scales Mound, Ill., a brother Raymond, at Park Rapids, Minn., and another brother Albert, who is in military service located at Camp Forest, Ga. One grandfather, John Jewell is alive. Besides these there are many relatives and friends who mourn his going.
