The remains of George W. Madden, a former resident, were brought here for burial last Monday, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Cora Shepard.

Mr. George W. Madden was born in Plymouth, Winsor Co., Vermont, Jan., 7th, 1828. He was an old soldier, enlisting in June, 1861, with Co. C. 3rd Iowa Infantry Volunteers, and was honorably discharged Jan. 3rd, 1864, when he re-enlisted, and served another year and a half.

About two months ago he met with an accident, and his condition was reported quite serious. He recovered, however. Then he was taken suddenly ill with acute gastritis, which was the cause of his death a few days later. He passed away June 30th, at Delta, Colo., at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cora Shepard, with whom he has made his home for some time. He attained the age of 87 years, 5 months and 24 days.

The G.A.R. took charge of the services at the cemetery, interment taking place in the Oakland cemetery, where one daughter and his wife were buried a number of years ago.

He was a brave soldier, and served his country well, both in war and peace. Being an honest and industrious man, he made many friends, who extend their sympathy to the bereaved daughters, Mrs. Cora Shepard* and Mrs. Effie Nixon*, both of Delta, Col., who are the sole survivors.

~North Iowa Times, Thursday, July 8, 1915; pg 5

*Effie is named Effie May NICKSON (rather than Nixon) in the 1904 obit of her mother Martha Thompson Madden that was printed in the NIT. Cora was not yet married in 1904.

Note: Interestingly, this brief announcement was made in the North Iowa Times, May 6, 1915 .. likely an erroneous report that he had died following the accident mentioned in his obituary:

"News was received last week of the serious illness of Wash Madden, a former resident of this city, at Delta, Colo. His death was reported this morning."
