Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Apr. 1904. Elkport and Vicinity column.
Mrs. Marie Menge was born June 3rd, 1833, in Mecklenberg, Germany, and died at Elkport, April 7th, 1904, aged 70 years, 10 months and 4 days. She emigrated to this country in 1854, landing in Guttenberg with her mother Aug. 15th. The following year, in April, she was united in marriage to Charles William Menge, in Garnavillo, Iowa. They resided in Guttenberg for two years and then came to Elkport. Here the remainder of her life was spent. To them were born eleven children, three sons and eight daughters, of whom three have preceded her to the great beyond. On the 24th of April, 1898, the husband and father too died. The past five years she has lived on the old homestead, now owned by her son, Louis F. Menge. The children still living are as follows: Mrs. Dora Mueller, Strawberry Point; Louis F. and August Menge, Elkport; Mrs. Ida Ireland, Ft. Meyers, Fla.; Mrs. Emma Junge, Keystone, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Welterlen, Manchester; Mrs. Louisa Kiebach, Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Marie Hoke, Dysart, Ia. She leaves to mourn her loss, thirty-six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mesdames Henry Musfelt, Sr., Fred Waterman and Aug. Benschneider, Sr., of Littleport; Mrs. Chas, Schoch, of Elkader; and Mrs. Fred Kramer, of Luzerne, Ia., are her five living nieces. Fred and John Rieck of Luzern, Ia., and Chris. Reick, of Minnesota are the nephews of the deceased. Christian Rieck, Sr., of Luzerne, is the brother-in-law. Hosts of friends sorrow over her departure, but she has had her prayers answered at last and now will enjoy the rest, sweet rest, for which she so longed, having been ill since last September and bearing her pains and troubles with such patience as only those who can who die in Christ. May her soul rest in peace and may all her loved ones follow the example of a true and noble life so peacefully ended. She will be missed by her neighbors and acquaintances also, for "there will be a vacant chair." And as she watched over all in life so will her soul look down with loving care and wait to welcome them one by one where there'll be no more sickness, pain or parting.
(Note: The surname Rieck/Reick was spelled both ways in the article as shown.)
