Elkader Register, Thur., 24 Mar. 1904. Garnavillo columns.

Mrs. Gustave Schmidt aged 73 years, died Tuesday evening, March 15th, 1904, after a lingering illness at the home of her son C. F. Schmidt. Funeral services occurred Thursday afternoon at St. Paul's conducted by Rev. W. K. Braun, after which she was laid to rest beside her husband, who preceded her nine years ago. Mrs. Schmidt was born and united in marriage in Germany, and in the spring of 1882, with her family, emigrated to this country making Garnavillo their home. Since the death of her husband her time was divided among her children. She was the mother of six children, two of whom have preceded her. Mrs. Wm. Schlee and Mrs. Chas. Raloff, of Postville, C. T. and F. J. Schmidt, of this place, Mourn her departure.

Dearest mother, thou hast left us,
And our loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God that has bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal.
Yet again we hope to meet thee,
When the day of life is fled,
When in Heaven with joy we greet thee,
Where no more are tears shed.

(Note: See the dual gravestone photo of she and her husband in the Garnavillo (new) cemetery.)
