Elkader Register, Thur., 17 July 1902.
At his home in Boardman twp., at 6 o'clock Tuesday evening, July 15th, occurred the death of Bals Thillen, of heart disease. He had been in poor health for some years, but at this time was only seriously ill for one week. Mr. Thillen was born in Koundorf, Luxemberg, Germany, Aug. 15th, 1827, being in his 75th year at the time of his death.
He came to America in 1857, settling at Luxemberg, Dubuque county, where he remained four years, then came to Boardman township which has since been his home. His life was that of the industrious, frugal farmer and he was an honest, respected citizen. Mrs. Thillen died in 1897. Five sons and three daughters, Mrs. J. B. Greiner, of Luxemberg, Dubuque county, Peter Thillen, of South Dakota, P. J. Thillen, Mazeppa, Minnesota, Henry, Nicholas, Fred, Mary and Emma of this place, survive to mourn the loss of father and mother.
Mr. Thillen was a quiet, industrious man, a good citizen and beloved by his family and neighbors.
The funeral will be held to-morrow (Friday,) morning at St. Joseph's church at this place.
