Elkader Register, Thur., 03 Apr. 1902. Volga column.
Mrs. Mary Burns died at the home of her son John Saturday March 29th, at 2:30 p.m., of old age. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m., from the Burns home to Sacred Heart church, burial in the new cemetery, Rev. Father Eardley officiating. Mrs. Burns was born in Ireland some 83 years ago, and emigrated to America early in 1849. She has passed through many pioneer hardships with her husband and family in and near the vicinity of Elkport, where she will be well remembered by the early settlers. Although blind for many years she was always cheerful. She was a devoted Christian and prayed without ceasing, her last prayer being that she might die at the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. T. Beherens, and whose home she called home. Deceased leaves three sons - John, who has been very sick and whom she has been asking the Lord to spare and take her instead; Maurice and Will living at Oelwein; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Fleming, of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Theo. Beherns, of Elkport. So ends the life of another generation. May she rest in peace.
