Elkader Register, Thur., 20 Mar. 1902. From the Dubuque Times, undated.

DIED- At her home in Millville twp., on March 12th occurred the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, aged 82 years, 2 months and 1 day. Deceased was born in 1820, near Jefferson City, Montgomery county, Missouri. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Manning. In 1837 at the age of seventeen years she married to Henry Carter and came to Dubuque to live. Dubuque at that time was a mining station consisting of a few log cabins. After residing there nineteen years she was widowed and moved with her family to Clayton county, where she has since resided. She was a woman of exemplary habits and will be greatly missed by her many friends. From a family of twelve children she leaves nine to mourn the loss of a kind and patient mother.- Dubuque Times.
