Elkader Register, Thur., 06 Mar. 1902. Clayton column.
The good people of this community were pained to learn of the unexpected demise of Wenzel Smazal, Saturday morning, after an illness resulting from a cold contracted some time last fall which seemed to become deeply rooted, and a few days prior to his death pneumonia set in despite of all medical skill could do for him. At eight o'clock Saturday morning his spirit returned to God who gave it, thus being released from suffering and pain borne by him for years past, during which time he has frequently been confined to his bed by inflammatory rheumatism.
Wenzel Smasal was born in Bishop-Ti_n__-S_m_schits, Austria, Dec. _ (single digit) 1839. At the age of thirteen years, he emigrated to the United States with his mother, landing at New Orleans, and later coming to Prairie du Chien, Wis., in 1852, where he entered the apprenticeship in a blacksmith shop, fitting himself for a first class mechanic. In 18_3 (looks like 1863) he came to Clayton and opened a blacksmith shop, which was successfully conducted by him, up to the time of his illness. He was married to Anna Shoepf, July 4th, 18_5 (looks like 1865), at Prairie du Chien. Three children came to bless this union of young hearts.
Deceased was ever a loving husband, an indulgent and kind father and made scores of friends in his business and social life, being always ready to aid the needy and attend the sick. By the earthly departure of our old friend and neighbor, our little town loses a true and worthy citizen in which another pioneer citizen has answered the great roll call of Him who doeth all things wisely and well. He was a charter member of Clayton Lodge, No. 143, A.O.U.W. in which order he was a faithful member to the time of his death. He is survived by his wife and three children, which are, Leonard J., Maggie and Mrs. Emma Lippert, of Chicago, who deeply mourn for him who was their all till they shall meet him "beyond," there to be once more re-united eternally.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Seifert, of Read, and the remains were laid to rest in Clayton cemetery, followed by a large concourse of friends who assisted in the last sad rites of their friend and neighbor. May he rest in peace.
