Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Dec. 1899.

This community was startled about 8:00 o'clock, Tuesday morning by the announcement that Peter Eberhart had suddenly fallen lifeless at his home. That morning he had arisen in his usual health, eaten breakfast, and with his horse and snow plow had cleared the walks of snow. He had driven his horse to the barn and asked his daughter to help him unhitch, and shortly he said to his wife who came near that he felt as if he was sleeping and sank into her arms. Dr. Patterson was at once summoned, and Mr. Eberhart carried to the house, but medical assistance was of no avail, he had gone beyond recovery from heart trouble.

Peter Eberhart was born July 17th, 1836, at Roszhaupten, Bavaria, Germany, being a son of Michael and Marie Meyer-Eberhart.

In 1852 he came to America, stopping for a short time in Indiana, and then came by team to Volga twp., Clayton county, where he resided until March 1895, when with his family he moved to Elkader.

On Feb. 22d, 1862, he was united in marriage with Leopoldina Debrowsky. Seven children were born to them, of whom four, Mrs. Lena Ernest, Matilda and Adolph, of Elkader, and Frank S., of Prairie du Sac, Wis., with his wife, survive to mourn the loss of husband and father, taken away without a moment's warning.

Mr. Eberhart was an upright citizen, honored and respected by all who have known him these many years. He will be mourned and missed not only by his own family but by a large circle of friends.

The funeral was held this afternoon at the Congregational church, the services being under the auspices of the Odd Fellows lodge of Guttenberg assisted by the members here, and by Bismark Lodge, No. 110, Iowa Workman, deceased being a member of these lodges. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family in their great loss.
