Elkader Register, Thur., 01 June 1899.

Jarius Munger

The subject of this sketch died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Belle Hendershot, at Thorpe, Iowa, on Thursday, May 25th, 1899. Mr. Munger was born in Warsaw, Wyoming county, N.Y., Jan. 22d, 1823. In 1843 with his parents he moved to Crawford county, Pa., where his parents died. On April 12th, 1848, he was united in marriage with Miss Cordelia Armstrong, the fruits of which union were eight children, five of whom survive. In 1867 Mr. and Mrs. Munger came to Clayton county, and located on a tract of land in Read twp., adjoining a farm owned by an elder brother who had preceded him to Iowa several years previous.

In 1881 he sold his farm in Read twp., and purchased the Stevenson farm near Elkader, where he continued until April 25th, 1895, when the family circle having been broken by the death of the wife, and the children with the exception of the youngest son having gone from the home circle, Mr. Munger sold the homestead and moved to Thorpe, Iowa, where he resided with a son and daughter until his demise. During his residence at Thorpe he has made frequent visits to Elkader enjoying the renewal of association with his old time neighbors and children. Since the death of his wife he often expressed a desire to be laid beside her in our beautiful cemetery, and he made all the necessary arrangements even to the last detail, which were carried out by his sorrowing children, grandchildren and friends.

After a short service at Thorpe, his remains were brought to Elkader on Saturday last, the funeral conducted by Rev. Mr. Fisk at the Congregational church, attended by sorrowing friends and former neighbors.

The surviving children are: Mrs. Belle Hendershot and Ernest Munger, of Thorpe; Mrs. Agnes Ellis and Mrs. Minnie Whitcomb, of LaCrosse, Wis.; Mrs. Lyman Tyler, and a son-in-law, John Park, of Elkader.
