Elkader Register, Thur., 13 Apr. 1899.
After a lingering illness of cancer, Charles McKinniss passed away to the great beyond at about 5:30 Thursday morning, April _, 1899. He bore his trials bravely and was never heard to complain during his severe suffering. Mr. McKinniss was born in 1838. In 1861 he was united in marriage with Jane Hughs. A loving wife and one son and two daughters are left to mourn. His son Evert and one daughter, Mrs. T. McCarron reside near this place while the other daughter, Mrs. D. McTaggert, resides in Minnesota.
A few years ago Mr. McKinnis went to Chicago for medical treatment, but, alas, as is to often the case, came back not much improved. He was a charter member of the Iowa Workmen. This fraternity will miss an ever willing and helping brother. But he has departed and his soul soars aloft to join the Supreme Lodge on high.
Our entire community sympathizes with the bereaved family, especially the heart-broken wife. All that was mortal of Charles McKinnis was placed in the last resting place Saturday under the auspices of the A.O,U.W., Rev. True officiating.
(Note: The surname McKinnis/McKinniss was spelled both ways in the obit, as shown. His gravestone in Mederville cemetery spells surname McKINNIS)
