—Four of Clayton's oldest residents— John Barnhart, Benjamin P. Burnham, Mrs. Ridenour and Mrs. Ann Slick— died within a few days of each other recently. All of these people settled in Clayton Co. in the early 50's.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows Benjamin Burnham was born in 1808 and is buried in Farmersburg-Wagner Cemetery. It shows Mrs. Ridenour was Martha who was born Oct. 26, 1908 and died June 12, 1897. She is buried in Brown Cemetery. I didn’t find any reference to Mrs. Slick or Mr. Barnhart.

Old Settlers Passed Away
The reaper, death has been busy the past week. Three old settlers of Clayton Co., have crossed the river within a period of five days.

June 13th, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.A. Hodge near Colesburg, Mrs. Ann Slick, aged 82 years and one day.

Born in Louisburg, York Co., Pa, June 12th, 1815, was married to the Rev. J.A. Slick in 1847 who died several years ago.

She was the mother of six children, four of whom precede her to the grave. The survivers [sic] are William and Sidney Slick.

Mr. Slick and Mr. Ridenour* were first cousins, and came to Iowa at the same time and settled among the rugged hills of the "Turkey Timber". Thus have passed away two mothers of the west. After a long and useful life, their last days passed in piece [sic] and quiet in the care of loving children. They were members of the United Brethren Church, belonged to the same class, passed away within a few hours of each other, were laid to rest in the same cemetery on the same day. The funeral services of both were conducted by the Rev. R.B. Emerson, of the U.B. Church, morning and evening, June 14.

So too, it is well with them now. Safe over the river, from the changeable things of earth, to the immutable realities of eternity.

Notes: burial in Brown cemetery; her maiden name is from the 1882 biography of her husband, posted on the Clayton co. IAGenWeb site, she was his 3rd wife.
