John Wittman of Garber, Iowa, was born April 12, 1855, in Jefferson township, on a farm near Osterdock, Iowa. He was born and reared in Clayton county, Iowa.
In the year 1879 on January 14, he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Mary Moser, of Osterdock. They lived on a farm until eight years when they retired and moved to their home in Garber, where he passed away Sunday morning, March 3. He was a robust man, but the prevailing epidemic overtook him and for a long time he suffered untold misery and pain.
To this union eleven children were born: Fred of Clayton, Iowa; Henry of Lake Lillian, Minn.; Andy of Garber, Iowa; Mrs. Lena Gill, St. Paul, Minn.; Louie of Lake Lillian, Minn.; Mrs. Anna Costigan, Elkport, Iowa; Alfred of Garber, Iowa; Mrs. Elizabeth Schnack, Elkport, Iowa; Mrs. Emma Rodas, Garber, Iowa; William of Lake Lillian, Minn.; John, Jr., of Elkport, Iowa.
Twenty-nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and many other relatives and friends who mourn his passing. The wife and children did all in their power to ease his suffering in his last illness. He was taken to a hospital in Dubuque and was given best of care, but he returned to his home, awaiting death.
He reached the age of 73 years, 10 months and 21 days.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 5, at 1 p.m. at the house of the deceased and at the Ev. Luth. Immanuels church of Elkport. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery of Elkport. The Rev. F. E. Damm was in charge.
The many years that Mr. Wittman was a resident of Elkport he was know as an honest, upright man and he leaves many friends to mourn his death. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in the death of their beloved husband and father.
The funeral was very largely attended. May he rest in peace.
