Clayton County Register, Thur., 28 Feb. 1929.

Christian Hagensick, an aged and respected citizen of Elkader, passed away at his home here Monday, February 25, at 2:10 o'clock in the morning, having attained the age of eighty-six years, two months and seven days.

Christian was the youngest of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Christoph Hagensick. He was born in Weissenstadt, Bavaria, Germany, where he received his holy baptism. When nine years of age he came with his parents to this country, settling on a farm in Read township, this county. He was confirmed, grew to manhood and was united in marriage to Anna Barbara Schmidt. The wedding ceremony was performed March 24, 1863, by Rev. Stockfeld, of Garnavillo.

The young couple started housekeeping on a farm in Garnavillo township remaining there for two years. After this they moved to Clayton Center, where Mr. Hagensick engaged in general merchandise business and also conducted the postoffice. After several years he purchased a farm north of Clayton Center, where the family lived for thirty-eight years and during which time the deceased served in the official capacity of township clerk, assessor and secretary of the school board of the township.

By combined hard labor and wise economy Mr. and Mrs. Hagensick were in a position in 1900 to take life easier and in July of that year they moved to Elkader which has been his home for the past twenty-eight years.

March 24, 1913, Mr. and Mrs. Hagensick celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, an event often wished for and looked forward to with great anticipation and certainly enjoyed by the aged couple and the entire family.

Mr. Hagensick was very fortunate, as regarding his health, and seldom complained, until several years ago when his health began to fail. He was confined to his bed for the past ten months but without much suffering. During all this time, however, he had the devoted attention of his daughter, Emma, who together with other members of the family, cared for him tenderly.

March 9, 1918, his wife and lifelong companion, who for fifty-five years had shared joy and sorrow with him, was called to the Other Shore. His death is mourned by his five daughters: Mrs. Frank Possehl of Monona; Mrs. Henry Tewes of Elkader; Mrs. Aug. Lenth of Monona; Mrs. Lenora Kurdelmeyer of Monona; and Miss Emma at home. Two sons preceded their father in death in infancy. He also leaves three grandchildren: Elsie Possehl, Helen and Lorene Kurdelmeyer; and a nephew, Louis Hagensick, who made his home with his uncle and aunt and was considered and treated as one of the family. Besides these a host of other relatives and friends mourn his death. He was the last of a family of five brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at the home this afternoon at 1:30, in the Evangelical church at 2:00, and interment will be made in the East Side cemetery, with Rev. C. H. Franke, his pastor, officiating.
