Amelia Russell Upton died here at her home Saturday evening, January 5th, 1929, of old age and la grippe, after an illness of about two weeks duration.
Amelia Russell, was born February 29, 1840, in Pennsylvania, the daughter of William and Emily (Penn) Russell. In 1853 deceased came to this county and October 22, 1859, was married to John Upton, here at Elkader, Four children were born to this union and these four all survive the departed mother. They are: Mrs. Emma Lamphier, and Edd, here at home; Charles on a farm near Volga; and Mrs. Julia Kelleher of Clermont. Ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.
Until 1911, Mrs. Upton and her family lived on a farm southwest of Elkader. In that year the family moved to Elkader which has since been the home of Mrs. Upton.
Deceased was a home-body, thinking always of her family, her children and these were always uppermost in her mind. Had she lived about eight weeks longer, she would have reached the advanced age of eighty- nine years, nineteen more than the allotted three-score and ten.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the late home and interment was made in the East Side cemetery on the family lot. Rev. C. H. Franke, of the evangelical church officiated.
