Herman Alt, a pioneer of Clayton township, died at his room at the Crefeld Hotel at Clayton last Wednesday morning, following a very brief illness. Mr. Alt was born in Germany and had many trips back to his native country. Mr. Alt had been visiting relatives in Wisconsin and was on his way to the home of his son, Albert, near Clayton, but decided to spend the night in Clayton. He was 88 years old.

Mr. Herman Alt was born on May 27th, 1837, in Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany. He was the second oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. John Alt. He came to America and arrived at Lancaster, Wis., on May 22nd, 1866. There he remained for 23 years, then came to Clayton County in 1888 and settled soon afterwards on a farm in Clayton township, where he lived for about 22 years.
On March 28th, 1870, he was united in marriage to Miss Kate Haan. This union was blessed with 14 children, 4 of whom preceded the father in death; Louis at the age of 38, Charlie at 40, and 2 in infancy. The mother died in January, 1910.
Mr. Alt enjoyed good health practically all his life. On Tuesday night, Sept. 8th, he took sick at Clayton and died Wednesday morning at 6:25.
Those who mourn his departure are: Mrs. Ida Hagensick of Marquette, Iowa; Mrs. Clara Grebin of Preston, Minn.; Theodore of Mountain Lake, Minn.; Arnold of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Anna Green of Dubuque; Albert of Clayton; Herman of Beetown, Wis.; Mrs. Kate Sawvell of Wall, S. Dak.; Mrs. Linda Fehlhafer of Garber; and Adolph of Clayton; 34 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Louis of Lancaster, Wis. Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. He had reached the age of 88 years, 3 months and 13 days.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Peace at Clayton on Saturday morning, Rev. K. Wm. Braun officiating. Interment in the Clayton cemetery. - Garnavillo Tribune
