Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 19 Mar. 1897. Elkport and Vicinity column.

DIED - Sunday, March 11th, Joseph D. Putz, aged 31 years. Deceased was the oldest son of Joseph Putz and was born and raised in Volga twp. About a year ago he was attacked with that dread disease consumption and all that kind friends and medical attendance could do was of no avail and he gradually grew worse until death relieved him of his suffering. Mr. Putz was one of God's noblemen, honest, true and upright. Every man who knew him was his friend. He leaves a wife and one child to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and father. The funeral took place Tuesday, Father Mulligan, of West Union officiating. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their sad affliction.
