Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 09 July 1897. Elkport and Vicinity column.
About 10 o'clock Wednesday night our people were startled by the report that Henry Hohman had been drowned in the Turkey River near the home of Wm. Freitag and that his body had not been recovered.
A large searching party was at once organized and left for the place of accident which is about five miles above Elkport. After diligently searching the body was recovered at 3 o'clock a.m.
The accident happened as follows: Henry left home Wednesday morning to visit with Wm. Freitag and family, he remained there during the day and in the evening Henry, accompanied by John Kriese, John Hohman and two of Mr. Freitag's boys went to the river to bathe. In some manner Henry got into deep water and was noticed to sink and did not rise again. The alarm was at once given but of no avail. Henry was a good swimmer and must have been taken with cramps or he would have been able to take care of himself.
The deceased was a son of Mrs. Mary Hohman and was the only support of his widowed mother. He was about 20 years of age and was a young man of sterling worth and integrity.
The sympathy of our entire community goes out to the bereaved heart broken mother in this sad hour of affliction. At this time we are not advised as to when the funeral will be held.
