Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 30 Apr. 1897.
At Luana, on Sunday last, April 25th, Uncle John Grinnell finished his earthly career and departed from among us. He was among the early settlers of the county, coming to Clayton in 18_5. He was born in Columbia, N.Y., Jan. 8, 1815. One son, John Jay, now in California, survives him. The deceased was at one time one of our leading horticulturists and possessor of a fine farm, but misfortune came to him as it does to many. Widely known and respected he will be missed and mourned. Thick and fast the men of other days are falling and the world moves on with but little note of the passing years.

Two old citizens of Clayton die.
McGregor, Iowa, April 20.—Clayton county is again called upon to mourn the death of two more of her oldest residents. On Sunday Hon. John Grinnell died at Luana, after an illness of several weeks. He had been in failing health for a year or more, which with old age and the vicissitudes of a long and active life in this country, and the dissapointments of latter years made death a kindly messenger. As one of the noble and hardy pioneers of this country, he was beloved by all who know him.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born January 8. 1815 and died April 25. 1897. He is buried in the Clayton Cemetery.
