John Pilkington, who died here on the 9th, was a native of Lancashire, England, and was born March 1, 1825. He left his native country in 1848 for Australia, and remained there until February 18_5, when he returned to England, and in March 18_3 he came to the United States. He spent about two years in Philadelphia and Pittsburg, Pa., then came west stopping one year in Peoria, Ill. From there he went to New Orleans, and in 1858 settled in Clayton county. In 1865 he enlisted in the 155th Illinois Infantry and served until the close of the war.
He has been twice married, first in England on June 8th, 184 _ (looks like 1845), to Mary Dickinson, who died in 18_1 (looks like 1851). He was again married April 21st, 1856, to Elizabeth Stewart, who still survives him. He leaves four children, F. T. Pilkington who resides at Littleport, Alice, now Mrs. C. E. Lovett of Elkport, W. J. Pilkington of Des Moines, and C. S. Pilkington of Epworth, Ia.
Mr. Pilkington was a highly respected citizen and has many friends who mourn his death. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their sad affliction. He was buried Tuesday, Rev. Ezra Gifford officiating.
