Elkader Register, Thur., 26 July 1900. Local News columns.
A. M. Mayhew, who represented the Staver Buggy Manufacturing Co. of Chicago, was found dead in his room at Hotel Bayless, about 12:30 Sunday night. Coroner Schmidt, of Garnavillo, was notified and an inquest was held Monday, C. W. Walser, H. H. Barnard and J. C. Stemmer, serving as jurors. Their verdict was that his death was from heart failure.
The evidence showed that he arrived here Saturday, sick and nervous; that Sunday evening he retired to his room about 12 o'clock, requesting Clerk Billy Wilson to bring him some ice water. Later, when Wilson returned he found Mr. Mayhew dead sitting in a chair.
His remains were taken in charge by the K. of P. lodge, and Tuesday were shipped to Milwaukee for burial. Deceased leaves a wife, a son and daughter,
