At the rsidence of his son William, near Elkader, on Saturday, March 3rd, occurred the death of Carl Schmidt, aged 72 years, 10 months and 11 days. He was born April 27, 1827, in Anklam, Pommern, and on Sept. 27th, 1851, was married to Miss Marie Schmidt. In 1857 he came to Garnavillo twp., where he lived 7 years, after which he bought a farm in Farmersburg twp., where he lived for 27 years. In 1895 occurred the death of his faithful wife and other sickness and death in his family caused him much sorrow. The last years of his life were spent at the homes of his children. He was the father of 12 children of whom 5 are living: Mrs. Wm. Best, of Read; Mrs. Emma Miller, of Farmersburg, and three sons.

The funeral which was held at Clayton Center, Rev. Seifert officiating, was largely attended, the Elkader and Clayton singers being present and taking part in the services.
