Elkader Register, Thur., 18 Jan. 1900. Volga City column.
Mr. William Robinson was born at Inverness, Canada, January 14th, 1830, and died at his home near Volga City on January 5th, 1900, aged 69 years, 11 months and 21 days. In 1856 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary McCammon, who died leaving an infant son now living in Kansas. In 1858 he was married to Miss Margaret Gallagher who survives him. Nine children were born to them, eight of whom are living. In 1870 he, with his family came to Dubuque county, Iowa, afterward settling near Volga, where he resided at the time of his death. At an early age he united with the Methodist church, but on coming to Volga he joined the Presbyterian chirch in which he served as an elder until failing health prevented his attendance at church. After months of patient suffering he was released on the evening of Jan. 5th. As he felt the approach of the Death Angel he said "This is going home," and so quietly fell asleep in Jesus. Thus passed away a kind husband and a loving father. As an officer in the church he was always cheerful and hopeful, confiding in divine authority and government. As a neighbor he was friendly and thoughtful. As a token of the high esteem in which he was held the funeral services were attended by a large and attentive audience. The sermon was preached from the following text, Ecl. 8-8: "There is no man that hath power over spirit to retain the spirit, neither hath he power in the day of death; and there is no discharge in that war." He was interred in the Volga cemetery.
"Ay, men may wonder while they scan
A living, thinking, feeling man,
Confirmed in such a rest to keep,
But angels say and through the word,
I think their happy smile is Heard,
He giveth his beloved, sleep."
