Elkader Register, Thur., 16 Mar. 1922. Strawberry Point column.

The community was saddened Thursday evening when word was passed from one to another announcing the death of Albert Smith. He and Mrs. Smith were at the Lyric for the first show and before the comedy started Mr. Smith made a peculiar noise and was carried out in the open air but before medical help arrived he had passed away. Heart trouble is thought to have been the cause. He was the oldest son of Andrew and Martha Smith, born Dec. 25, 1857, in the Province of Ontario, Canada. When a small child his parents moved to Clayton County where his father purchased a small farm. Here he grew to manhood. When Mr. Smith was 18 years of age his father passed away leaving the management of the farm for him. He conducted a feed store for a while and soon afterward bought and dealt in live stock. In 1892 he became a partner in the meat market and in 1902 he became owner of same and continued until 1911. In 1913 he associated himself with his present partner Carl A. Schoeppe and repurchased the business which they have since conducted. Mr. Smith was a member of the M.W.A., R.N.A., I.O.O.F., A.F. & A.M. and O.E.S. Lodges. Besides his bereaved wife he leaves three sons and one daughter: L. C. Smith of Cresco, B. A. Smith of Fayette, Claude C. Smith a student in the University at Iowa City, and Mrs. H. D. Staehle of Minneapolis, besides three grandchildren and other relatives and friends. A good man has been taken from us but his kind acts will not be forgotten as he was ever ready to help those in trouble. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Congregational church by Rev. Maxwell, after which interment took place in our beautiful cemetery. The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved family but how little that consoles them.
