**** From the Thurs., 11 Aug. 1892 issue of "The Elkader Register," Clayton section, pages 4, column 4:

DROWNED.

Last Saturday evening, at about half past seven o’clock, our little town was startled by the sad intelligence that Harley Harvey, son of James N. and Levina L. Harvey, had been drowned. In company with several others he crossed the river to a log raft moored at the bank opposite here, for the purpose of bathing, and in diving from the raft he by some accident, was drawn under it by a possible surface current of the water. Upon his failing to reappear his companions made diligent search but failed to find him. They then gave the alarm and immediately a number of men hurried to the spot and began dragging the river. Owing to the extreme size of the raft and depth of the water, the work progressed very slowly, and the body was not recovered until some hours later.

Deceased was approaching his 18th birthday; he came to Clayton with his parents in the spring of 1887, where he since resided and regularly attended our public schools up to about a year ago, when he entered upon the study of telegraphy, which he had since mastered, and was shortly to enter the employ of the railroad company as nigh operator at some station on their line. Harley was a young man whom everybody liked, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him, being a bright and kind hearted companion, a dutiful son and loving brother.

The funeral services were held at the M. E. church at 1 o’clock Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Mr. Linn, after which the remains, followed by a large concourse of mourning friends, were laid to rest in the Clayton cemetery. The floral offerings were many, and the grave was robbed of its grimness by a lining of flowers.

The bereaved family has the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction.

A CARD.

We sincerely thank our friends for their assistance during our bereavement. Their many acts of kindness will never be forgotten by us.

JAMES N. HARVEY AND FAMILY.

**** From the Wed., 17 Aug. 1892 issue of the "Elkader Argus," Clayton section, page 8, columns 2 and 3:

It has become our sad duty to say a few words in memory of our much lamented young friend and neighbor, whose death by drowning, on the eve of the 6th inst. was briefly mentioned in last week’s ARGUS.

Harlie Harvey as born Sept. 19th, 1874, near Bloomington, Wis., and was the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. James Harvey of our town. He came to Clayton with his parents in 1886, where he continued to reside up to the date of his sad death; he attended our public schools until within about a year when he took up the study of telegraphy which he had just mastered and was about to accept a position as night operator on this line, having received an offer only a few hours before his untimely end. Deceased was highly esteemed by all who formed his acquaintance, for his many noble qualities of heart and mind, his loss is deeply felt among all his friends and associates. Besides his sorrowing parents he leaves his sister, Helen and brothers Earnest and Ray to mourn the loss of a dutiful son and a kind and loving brother. His sister, Effie and brother, Charley have gone before to welcome him to that happy land from whence none return. Parents alone can realize the sorrow and grief of those who are called upon to part with their beloved children at the hand of death. Time alone can heal the sorely wounded heart. May the grief stricken mother find some consolation in the thought; that “Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.” The funeral was conducted on Monday by Rev. Linn, from the M. E. church, and was largely attended. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, silent tokens of love and respect from his many sorrowing friends. “Rest in peace.”

Mr. and Mrs. James Harvey desire us to thank the numerous friends of the family, who assisted them in the time of their great bereavement, as well as the many who came to pay their last respects at the funeral. Their kindness will always be remembered.

[TRANSCRIBERS NOTES: Note obvious item about his drowning was found in the previous issue of "The Elkader Argus" as that obituary states; in fact, that issue of 10 August has not Clayton section, but no item is readily found elsewhere in the issue. His name is spelled differently in both obituaries, and the year of the family's move to Clayton is also given different in both obituaries.]
