Johan Kainz, Sr., who died of old age after an illness of three weeks in his home in Read township, Aug. 27, 1933, reached the age of 83 years, nine months and 25 days.
He was born Nov. 2, 1849, in Sieghard, Austria, the son of Johan and Elizabeth Kainz. He received his education in Krem_, Austria, and in the year 1873, in Vienna was united in marriage to Josephine Pfeiler. Six children were born to this union - three sons and three daughters. Besides the aged widow, three sons and one daughter survive, namely: Johan, Jr., at Dyersville; Joseph and Frank and Mrs. Rose Funk at Elkader. He is also survived by four brothers, Jacob, Franz, Alexander and Joseph.
The deceased came to this county and settled on a farm in Read township in 1892. Prior to coming to this country he served 13 years in the Austrian Army and 10 years in the Vienna fire department. In the former he won medals for expert marksmanship, while in the latter he was decorated for heroism and long service. Besides following the life of a farmer he was a mason by trade and in Austria qualified as a master mason.
Funeral services were held here in St. Joseph's church, Aug. 29th, The Rev. J. P. Taken officiating. Interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery.
