The body of Charles Gurkow who died last week at McGregor was brought to Mederville for burial last Wednesday. Mr. Gurkow formerly lived in Mederville and has two children buried there.

Charles Ferdinand Gorkow, 53, well known in Elkader and vicinity, died at his home in McGregor last Monday morning, June 19.

He was born in Germany, Aug. 28, 1874, the oldest son of August and Augusta Gorkow. At the age of seven he came to America with his parents locating on a farm near Colesburg, later moving to Littleport, Iowa. He grew to young manhood here, assisting with the farm work and taking up the trade of stone-mason, residing at Mederville and McGregor.

On Nov. 3rd, 1896, Mr. Gorkow was married to Lorena Jones of Edgewood.

Nine children were born to this union, two sons dying in infancy. Those remaining to mourn his loss are the widow, Lorena Gorkow; Mrs. E. J. Clinton of Marquette; Mrs. Jennie Golz and Elwin Gorkow of McGregor; Carl of Lancaster, Wis.; Mrs. Cleyta Lange of Froelich; Mrs. Ina Jensen, boulder, Ill.; and Miss Aloe at home. He also leaves a step-son Leo A. Robinson of Edgewood, and six sisters and four brothers: Mrs. Amelia Cochrone of Great Lakes, Minn.; Mrs. Anna Riley of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Emma Treffey, New Rockford, N. Dak.; Mrs. Dora Gibbons of Fresno, Calif.; Mrs. Minnie Huff of Sioux Falls, S. Dak.; and Mrs. Augusta Dins of Denver, Iowa; August of Waterloo; Albert of Birchwood, Wis.; and Philip of Tampa, Fla. One brother, John, was killed in the World War. He is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church in McGregor Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Henry Allhouse and Rev. J. Franklin Parsons officiating with interment in the cemetery at Mederville.
