Clayton County Register, Thur., 10 May 1928. Garnavillo column.
Mr. Charles Clair was born in Volga Township, November 12th, 1865, as the second youngest hild of Mr. Davis Clair and his wife, A__en Crosby.
As a child he came with his parents to Garnavillo, where he attended school and grew to manhood.
He was married to Miss Rose Hartwig at Prairie du Chien, (Wis.), June 4th, 1906.
For more than 35 years he conducted a black smith shop in Garnavillo to the entire satisfaction of the community. Doring this entire time he took off only 10 days for vacation.
Last fall in October, he was compelled to seek medical aid and on November 17th, it was considered advisable for him to confine himself as much as possible to his bed. Since that time he did not leave the house any more. While his condition was considered serious, his end came as a decided shock to his wife and friends Monday morning five minutes past seven o'clock.
The Dr. was called and all that medical knowledge and loving care could do was done to prolong his life, but God had called him home after many years of hard labor and toil. He reached the age of 62 years, 5 months and 18 days. He is survived by his grief stricken widow, Mrs. Chas. Clair, and three sisters: Mrs. Ed. Schroeder, of Postville, Iowa; Mrs. Jake Kramer, of McGregor, Iowa; and by Mrs. Mabel Kleckner, of Chicago, Illinois, besides many relatives and friends.
His mother preceded him in death, November, 1906, and his father passed away in December, 1913.
