Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 27 Aug. 1914.

As announced last week the death of Supervisor Fred Groth occurred at his home in Guttenberg Thursday Aug. 20th, at 2:30 a.m.

Deceased was born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, on April 12 1857, and therefore was 57 years, 4 months and 8 days of age at the time of his death. In the year 1866 he came to the United States and for the past 47 years has been a resident of Clayton County, Iowa. On September 18, 1881, he was married at Garnavillo to Miss Louise Seeman. For many years he was successfully engaged in farming in Jefferson township and about a year ago he moved to Guttenberg with his family, where he lived until his death. He was township clerk, and also secretary of the Jefferson township school board for many years.

In 1910 he was elected as a member of the Board of Supervisors of Clayton County and in 1912 he was again elected as a member of the board, and was serving his second term at the time of his death, and always managed the affairs of his office in the interest of the taxpayers. He also followed the occupation of bridge builder for eight years. He was taken seriously ill with appendicitis on August 10th and on August 13th he underwent an operation. He was a patient sufferer and did not give up hopes for recovery until the Angel of Death called him to that world where there is no more suffering, but joy and happiness forever. All that loving hands could do and medical knowledge could suggest was done for him to ward of death, but all to no avail. His death is deeply mourned by his wife, five sons: John, of Canada; William of Osterdock; Fred of Guttenberg; James, of South Dakota; and Charles, of Elkport; and one daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Barnhart, of Colesburg, a number of grandchildren and a large number of relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed, as he was a kind and true husband, father and friend.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from his home in Guttenberg and were very largely attended by people from all parts of the county. Thy were in charge of the Masonic lodge and the impressive Masonic burial service was given at the grave. Rev. Ruthford, of the M.E. church, at Guttenberg, preached the sermon.

Mr. Groth, both in his private and his public life, won the esteem and friendship of the people with whom he came in contact.
