Lemuel Allen was born in New Brunswick, May 9th, 1850, and moved at an early age to Canada, where he spent his boyhood days. In 1868 he moved to Manchester, Iowa, and in 1876 was united in marriage to Jeanette Van Antwerp, of Manchester. To this union were born two sons and two daughters: Charles J. and Clarence R.; Mrs. Frank Meyer, and Lydia Ann, the latter having died at the age of 14 years. In 1883 he moved onto a farm in Coffin's Grove township, near Manchester. In 1908 Mr. and Mrs. Allen moved to the city of Strawberry Point, where they have since resided. About twenty-eight years ago he united with the Congregational church of Strawberry Point, since which time his seat was rarely vacant at the preaching services. Much of this time he served as an official member, was a Deacon at the time of his death April 4, 1914. He leaves to mourn his death, besides his wife, three children, several brothers and sisters and a host of friends in Strawberry Point, Manchester, Iowa, and elsewhere. The funeral was held at the home Tuesday afternoon, April 7th, Rev. A. A. Wood, pastor of the Congregational church, officiating. His remains were taken to Manchester, Iowa, for burial.
