Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 26 Mar. 1914. Elkport and Vicinity column.

Death comes to claim young and old, time, age and conditions not taken into consideration. The subject of this sketch, Miss Marie Maier, was the daughter of Jacob Maier, an old settler in Volga township, near Communia, and his loving wife, who passed to her reward many years ago.

Marie was born May 27th, 1873, on the old homestead where she spent her babyhood, childhood, girlhood and maidenhood, caring lovingly and dutifully for the father upon whom the frost of years has placed a silvered brow; and also for the nephew and nieces, children of her brother Emil and wife, who also lived in this home. It was while in the performance of these duties that Marie was taken ill on Saturday, March 7th, and died on Thursday evening, March 12th, from an attack of erysipelas.

On the following Sunday burial took place, the services being conducted by Rev. Foelsch. The remains were taken from the home, where a very large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends had assembled, to the Lutheran church in Elkport. Here, too, a goodly number awaited the coming of this long cortege, for Marie had been a faithful member all through life. After the services at the church the friends who had acted as pall-bearers, conveyed all that was mortal, to the Lutheran cemetery on the hill above the church, where has lain her mother for many years.

The pall-bearers were the Misses Emma Meyer, Lizzie Krouse, Sarah Refle, Katie Wentz, Elsie Kopp and Mrs. George Meyer.

The duets were sung by Miss Anna Bals and Mrs. Henry Foelsch.

Those who are left to mourn her death, in the immediate family, are the aged father, Jacob Maier; two brothers, Emil C., on the homestead, and Fred, station agent at Wadena; her sisters, Mrs. Anna Stoecker, of Charles City, and the Misses Alvina and Lucy, of Rockford, all in Iowa.
