Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 01 Jan. 1914.
On Saturday the remains of Mrs. Marie Coates were brought to Elkader to be laid to rest in the East Side cemetery.
Marie Bunting was born in Germany, May 12th, 1869. When thirteen years of age she came, with her parents, to this country and settled in Clayton County, Iowa. Here Marie grew up to womanhood and was married on Dec. 14th, 1894, to Josiah Coates, remaining in this county until seven years ago when they moved to Waterloo, Iowa. For the last twelve months the loving wife and mother was under the doctor's care. A few months ago she came to Elkader on a visit with her parents and brother and at the same time taking treatments in the hopes of being benefited. But all efforts to prolong and save her life were in vain. She returned home to Waterloo, where she was relieved of all earthly suffering in the evening of Christmas Day, Dec. 25th, at the age of 44 years, seven months and thirteen days. Her departure is mourned by her life's companion, Mr. Josiah Coats, one daughter, Eva; two sons, Harvey and Rutherford; her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bunting, of Elkader; two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Strong and Mrs. Matilda Feller, of Fayette county; three brothers, Charles, of Michigan, William, of Wagner township, and Herman, of Elkader.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Franke on Sunday afternoon at the Bunting home and Friedens church. May she rest in peace.
(Note: Both spellings of the surname Coats / Coates were used in the article, as presented here.)
