The news of the death of Lyman Sherwood will be learned with sorrow by friends not only in this part of Iowa, but in neighboring states to which his business often called him. No man in this community was more widely known or highly respected for his many sterling qualities.

His death occurred in this place, Friday, March 26th, 1880, after an illness of several weeks.

Lyman St. John Sherwood was born in the town of Greenfield, Saratoga county, N.Y., June 6, 1838, consequently at the time of his death he was nearly 42 years of age.

In the fall of 1851 he came west and settled in Cherry Valley, Ill., and engaged as clerk in a hardware store, where he remained until 1858, when he came to Strawberry Point which has been his home since, with the exception of two or three years spent in Dubuque.

June 30th, 1862, he was married to Miss Amanda Sterns, with whom he lived happily to the time of his death, and who, with two sons, is left to mourn the departure of the best of husbands and fathers.

Mr. Sherwood for a number of years was engaged in the mercantile business here, but for several years past has been engaged as traveling salesman for an Eastern whole sale house, and obtained the reputation of being one of the best on the road, and among his customers has smiling countenance and genial ways made none but friends. He was a member and class leader in the M.E. Church here, and was a faithful and devoted Christian, taking a great interest in the Sunday school and the cause of Temperance, and was a friend of all enterprises for the public good. He will be sadly missed.

~Strawberry Point Press, Wednesday, March 31, 1880

Note: Burial is in the Strawberry Point cemetery. His widow later re-married, to Gilbert Cooley.
