Lois Mae (Schroeder) Sturm was born April 19, 1927, the daughter of John L. and Mae (Ashby) Schroeder, on the farm near Tomah, Wisconsin. She was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 20, 2013, at the age of 85 years and 11 months. She is survived by her devoted husband and partner of over 65 years, Robert A. Sturm of Englewood, Florida.
Lois was born into difficult circumstances. She and her twin, Evelyn, were born quite prematurely and Evelyn died the same day. Later the same year, her family lost the farm. After numerous moves during the great depression years, Lois was able to graduate from Milwaukee South Division High School in 1945. She was a bookkeeper and receptionist at West Side Lumber in Watertown, Wisconsin, when she met Robert, who had just returned home from the war and building a house for his mother. Lois and Bob were married in Watertown on November 23, 1947, and were blessed with three sons, with eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband Bob, Lois is survived by her sons: Arnold (Darlene) Sturm of Sun Prairie, WI; David (Naomi) Sturm of Bakersfield, CA; and Joel (Beth) Sturm of Los Angeles, CA. Lois is also survived by eight grandchildren: Pamela (Mark) Gentry; Robert (Sally) Sturm; Bill (Nikki) Sturm; Brad (Lisa) Sturm; Rachel (Tim) Uthmann; Laura (Jared) Lemen; Caleb (Tricia) Sturm; and Philip (Ally) Sturm; and by twelve great-grandchildren: Madeline, Brett, Justin, Bethany, Jacob, Leah, Mia, Calvin, Asher, Joy, Melody, and Jasmine. Lois is also survived by her sister: Charlotte (Don) Brink of Fort Myers, FL.
Lois was confident of her calling to follow her Lord Jesus from her teenage years. All of her adult life she loved to sing in and out of church, and always spoke openly of her love for her Lord. She was also devoted to her family, and wrote two books about family and faith. First, in 1980 she wrote "Blessed with This Family! A Pictorial Genealogy of Schroeder, Ashby, and Related Families." In 1996, she wrote "My Dear Grandchildren… An Autobiographical Account of God's Hand of Blessing and Protection on My Life!" in the form of letters to her grandchildren to ensure that they understood the importance of a personal relationship with God. One of her favorite Bible verses is Psalm 27:1
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 25, 2013 at Calvary Baptist Church, 75 North Pines Street, from 1 Pm until service time at 2 Pm. Burial will be in City Cemetery, Guttenberg, Iowa.
Englewood Community Funeral Home has been selected to handle arrangements.
