The wife of Charles Zugenbuhler expired last week in Sioux City, where the family has resided since leaving Dubuque years ago. She was a Guttenberg woman named Carr before marriage and leaves four children, two of them twins.
Mr. Zugenbuhler is a tinsmith by trade, and when living in Dubuque was in the employ of C. Mason.
~Dubuque Daily Herald, January 19, 1886
Note: The death notice is not entirely correct as they didn't reside in Sioux City "since leaving Dubuque". The couple are enumerated in Butler co. on the 1870 U.S. census. The 1880 U.S. census, Parkersburg, Butler co. IA enumerates Charles Zugenbuhler, age 35, a tinner and his wife Barbary, age 32; in the household are 4 children, which includes 5 y/o twin daughters (Bertha & Lillie, b. Dubuque co.). Mr. Zugenbuhler is listed in a Sioux City City Directory for 1884. The 1885 Iowa State census enumerates the couple & their 4 children in Sioux City, Woodbury co. IA. The 1897 marriage record for their daughter Bertha, gives Barbara's maiden name as Lahr (rather than Carr). I could not find a record of her living in Clayton county. Interested researchers should verify this information independently.
