Clayton County Register, Thur., 15 Dec. 1927.

Alexander Rudolph Pagan, an aged resident of Clayton County, Iowa, passed away at the Fred Schneider home, four miles west of Elkader, on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 11th, 1927, at the age of 80 years, four months and two days.

Deceased was born at Nidau, Kanton Bern, Switzerland, August 9th, 1847. He was united in marriage to Monika Rebholz on January 13th, 1873. Three children were born to this union: Alexander Pagan of Highland Twp., Mrs. Fred Schneider, of Boardman Twp., and Adolph Pagan of Highland Twp.

The wife and mother passed away on March 5th, 1887, and on May the 6th of the following year Mr. Pagan entered into a second marriage with Leopoldina Dobler. This union was also blessed with three children: Otto Pagan, of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. John Gentleman, of Omaha, Nebr., and one child preceded the parents in death.

In 1882 the family came to America, and landed in New York, May 17th, arriving in Elkader, Iowa, five days later. In the fall of the same year they left for Dubuque, Iowa, where Mr. Pagan found employment as a "pattern maker," at which he was very efficient.

Four years later, on March 17th, 1886, the second wife was called by death, and the father kept house with the children, the best they could.

After the children had grown up and had established homes of their own, the father, not being able to work at his trade any longer, made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Fred Schneider, most of the time.

On July 27th, 1917, he suffered a paralytic stroke. Although recovering somewhat from this, the left side of the body remained weak and paralyzed, and for the last two years he was entirely confined to his room, hardly able to leave the bed. The best of care was given him by his faithful daughter and by the various members of the family. Nothing was left undone to give relief and comfort.

Besides the children already mentioned, he also leaves: five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; ( three or four words blurred) two brothers, Carl and Edward, in Switzerland.

Funeral services were held at the Fred Schneider home and in the Evangelical church on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 13th, with Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery.
