Marvin Vine Dunning, one of the pioneer citizens of northeastern Iowa, died at the home of his son, E.G. Dunning, north of Manchester, February 22nd, 1919, aged 82 years and 12 days.

Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, Rev. W.J. Suckow, pastor of the First Congregational church, having charge of the services. The remains were then placed in the receiving vault in Oakland cemetery, to be interred in the Masonville cemetery later in the spring.

Mr. Dunning was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, February 10th, 1837, and came with his parents to Iowa in an early day, settling on a farm in Allamakee county.

On December 4th, 1861, he was united in marriage with Martha G. Garber of East Elkport, now known as Garber, having been named in honor of the family. He and his wife came to Delaware County and settled on a farm near Masonville, and resided her for forty years.

In 1901 he sold his farm and moved to Oklahoma. Unable to farm longer he disposed of his property there and returned to Iowa and made his home with his son, Mr. E.G. Dunning, north of Manchester.

Mr. Dunning was one of a family of ten children, two of whom are still living - Mrs. Martha Atwood of Northwood, Iowa, and G.B. Dunning of Stanburg, Mo.

While he lived in Masonville he united with the Baptist church. He was a substantial citizen, lending assistance to every worthy cause. His neighbors in a time of sickness or trouble always found in him a true friend. During his long illness he was tenderly cared for by his son and daughters, the son Martin being unable to be with him.

He leaves to mourn for him the aged wife, and four children, one son dying in infancy. The children are - Mrs. Emma Seeley of Anamosa, Iowa; L. Rose, superintendent of the general hospital at Enid, Oklahoma; Martin V. Dunning of Stanley, New Mexico; and E.G. Dunning, of Delaware County; also two grandchildren, Rose Fern Seeley, of Chicago; and Maryin Lucien Dunning.

~Manchester Democrat, Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1919

Parents - Vine Dunning and Rebecca A. Peet, both buried in the Hardin, Allamakee co. IA cemetery.
