Clayton County Register, Thur., 20 Jan. 1927.
After a serious illness of about three weeks Ole E. Gunderson passed away at the Lenth hospital, Elkader, Iowa, on Monday morning, Jan. 17th, 1927, at the age of 73 years, three months and twenty-two days.
He was born in Boscobel, Wis., on September 25th, 1853, but coming to this community in early youth, he is to be considered as one of the early settlers.
On April 5th, 1877, he was united in marriage to Sarah Rierson, and for almost fifty years this couple was privileged to share with each other earth's joys and sorrows, until death did part.
The six children born to this union, all of whom are living, and with the aged mother mourn the loss of a loving father and devoted husband are: Mrs. Frank Anderson of Arpin, Wis.; Edward Gunderson, West; Mrs. Albert Jellum, St. Olaf; Ralph Gunderson, St. Olaf; Mrs. Sam Christenson, St. Olaf; Gunder Gunderson, at home.
He also leaves five grandchildren, three brothers, other relatives and many old time friends and neighbors. The three brothers are: Embert Gunderson, Elkader; George Gunderson, Clermont; Henry Gunderson, Minnesota.
Being blessed with a strong constitution, Mr. Gunderson enjoyed continued good health until June of last year, when he began to fail. Even then he was able to attend to the various farm duties until shortly before being taken to the hospital, at Elkader, for special treatment, which was about three weeks ago. Everything possible was done to give comfort and relief to the patient sufferer until he closed his eyes in the last sleep.
It was a sad coincidence indeed, that while the husband and father was at the hospital, his aged wife and a son were seriously ill at home.
The most sincere sympathy of the community is with the family in their bereavement and sore affliction.
Services were held at the late home near Gunder at 1:00 p.m. yesterday and at two o'clock at the U.B. church. Interment was made in the U.B. cemetery, with Rev. C. H. Franke of Elkader officiating.
