Clayton County Register, Thur., 6 Jan. 1927. Guttenberg column.

Miss Mertie B. Overbeck passed away on Monday morning at the home of her father, H. J. Overbeck, in this city, after an illness of a long duration, at the age of 29 years, seven months and 14 days. Deceased was born at Guttenberg, Iowa, on May 10, 1897, where she grew to young womanhood. She was a graduate of the Guttenberg High School and later attended Cornell College at Mt. Vernon, Iowa. For a time she was engaged in teaching school at various places. Later she took a course in stenography at Chicago and successfully followed that work for some time, being employed at County Attorney G. W. Hunt's office in this city, until she broke down in health completely. During her illness she was a patient sufferer and hopes for recovery until the Angel of Death called her to the Great Beyond. All that loving hands could do and medical knowledge could suggest, was done for her during her long illness to save her life, but all to no avail. She was a young lady of a pleasing personality, loved by all in this community, and was a kind and loving daughter, sister and friend. Her untimely death is deeply mourned by her father, two sisters, Mrs. Hilda MacGregor of Madison, S.D., and Mrs. Etta Geuder of Minneapolis, Minn., one brother, Walter Overbeck of Chicago, Ill, and many other relatives and friends who will all sadly miss her. Funeral services were held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church in this city on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Emil Lehne officiating. The body was laid to rest in the city cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near, which showed that deceased was held in high esteem by all who knew her. The family has the sympathy of all in this community.
